About the MG4

The MG4 might look like it’s swooped in from another planet, but it does have connections to the UK – and not just in the badge. MG’s design headquarters are in London and it has a small engineering team in Longbridge to set up cars for UK roads. The MG4 is particularly suited to UK roads and that’s why.

An electric hatchback, the MG4 is here to tease you away from petrol or diesel powered alternatives like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra. It has a growing number of EV rivals, including the Volkswagen ID.3, Renault Megane E-Tech, Citroen e-C4 and the new electric Astra.

What versions of the MG4 are there?

There are two trim levels – SE and Trophy. SE is available with 51kWh and 64kWh batteries, while Trophy is available with the 64kWh battery and an Extended Range 77kWh one. Even the smallest battery offers up to 218 miles from a charge, while the largest battery adds about 100 miles to that figure.

Then there’s the MG4 XPower, a hot hatch version with the acceleration of a Lamborghini – but the price of a well-optioned supermini.

What features does the MG4 have?

The MG4 gets a sleek interior with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a free-standing digital driver’s display. Both the screens look sharp and can be configured to your preferences using star buttons on the steering wheel. The MG4 uses its electric powertrain to maximise interior space, so there’s plenty of room for four adults.

All MG4s come with automatic LED headlights, adaptive cruise control and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Is the MG4 a good car?

Yes, the MG4 is a great electric hatchback. It’s affordable to buy and run, has a strong range estimate and comes with plenty of equipment. What’s more, the MG4 is an incredibly safe car, and comes with a seven-year manufacturer warranty.

MG4 motor range explained

MG4 51kWh

The entry-level powertrain offers 218 miles of range and 168hp, which is enough for acceleration from 0-62mph in a brisk 7.5 seconds – plenty for any driving situation.

MG4 64kWh Long Range

Adding a larger battery gives the MG4 more flexibility for long journeys – the Long Range’s 281-mile range estimate (270 miles for the Trophy spec) is more than enough for the vast majority of use cases. The 200hp motor doesn’t improve the acceleration, but it’s still more than quick enough.

MG4 77kWh Extended Range

Only available on the top-spec Trophy model, the Extended Range version offers up to 323 miles of charge. It’s coupled to a 242hp motor for a 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds, which is hot-hatch-like.

MG4 XPower 64kWh

But if you want proper hot hatch pace, the XPower will scorch from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds – as quick as a Lamborghini Urus – and on to a top speed of 124mph. The XPower offers up to 239 miles of range.

Your MG4 questions answered

The MG4’s electric powertrain means it should be reliable, as there is very little to go wrong with the motor or battery.

Yes, in its highest regenerative braking setting, you can drive the MG4 just using the accelerator in most scenarios. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the car will immediately slow down, and it can come to a complete stop if you don’t intervene.

Provided that the Tesla charger in question is available to non-Tesla cars, then yes you can. There are currently 42 UK sites where almost any electric car can use a Tesla charger.
